How to Create a New PayPal Client ID and Secret Key

Step 1: Create a PayPal Business Account

Before getting started, ensure you have an active PayPal business account. If not, you can quickly set one up by providing details like your legal business name and taxpayer identification number. You’ll also need to link your business bank account to receive sales proceeds.

Step 2: Create a New App

At the top of the dashboard, click on “Apps & Credentials” (or “My Apps & Credentials” on mobile). You’ll see a “Default Application” under “REST API apps,” which you can ignore.

  1. Click the blue Create App button to proceed.
  2. Provide a name for your PayPal app, such as “My Online Store.”
  3. Select whether the app is for a Merchant or Platform:
    • PayPal Merchants: Process payments for your own business. Funds will be deposited into your business account.
    • PayPal Platforms: Process payments for other sellers on a marketplace. Payments flow through your business and are distributed to users.
  4. Click Create App again to generate your Client ID and Secret Key.
